Are Risk Averters Averse to Risky Gambles?∗

چکیده

This paper defines local aversion to a risk index. I show that the local aversion to the Aumann and Serrano [2008] index of riskiness coincides with absolute risk aversion, and that the same applies for the Foster and Hart [2009] measure of riskiness. Using this “local consistency” I offer a new approach for axiomatizing the Aumann and Serrano index of riskiness and present other applications of this approach for relative risk aversion, “tardiness” (time preferences) and the appeal of information.

Neural correlates of anticipation risk reflect risk preferences.

Individual risk preferences have a large influence on decisions, such as financial investments, career and health choices, or gambling. Decision making under risk has been studied both behaviorally and on a neural level. It remains unclear, however, how risk attitudes are encoded and integrated with choice. Here, we investigate how risk preferences are reflected in neural regions known to proce...

Risk Attitudes of Children and Adults: Choices Over Small and Large Probability Gains and Losses

In this paper we examine how risk attitudes change with age. We present participants from age 5 to 64 with choices between simple gambles and the expected value of the gambles. The gambles are over both gains and losses, and vary in the probability of the non-zero payoff. Surprisingly, we find that many participants are risk seeking when faced with high-probability prospects over gains and risk...

Do risk-averse people lie less? A comparison of risk-taking behavior in deceptive and non-deceptive scenarios

We studied decision making in situations in which there is a monetary incentive to take risk, and in which the risk taking option sometimes involves deception. We conducted a within participant experiment in which we compared risk taking in deception conditions to pure (non-deceptive) gambles with equivalent risks and outcomes. We confirmed the fourfold pattern of risk attitudes in both conditi...

Running Head: DE Gap in Risky and Ambiguous Gambles 1 In Press: Journal of Behavioral Decision Making The Description-Experience Gap in Risky and Ambiguous Gambles

Recent research in decision making reported a description-experience (DE) gap: opposite risky choices when decisions are made from descriptions (gambles in which probability distributions and outcomes are explicitly stated) and when decisions are made from experience (the knowledge of the gambles is obtained by sampling outcomes from unknown probability distributions before making a choice). Th...

Hedonic Context Modulates Risky Choices and Reward Responses in Amygdala and Dorsal Striatum

The hedonic context of the environment can alter an individual’s emotional states and consequently their risk taking. Here we reveal the brain mechanisms underlying music-induced unstable risk preferences using functional MRI (fMRI). Subjects listened to self-selected liked or disliked music while they decided to accept or reject risky gambles. Behaviorally loss aversion was lower during liked ...
